The WZB is planning an international workshop on “Innovations in Field and Survey Experiments” held as a two-day workshop on July 5–6, 2025, at the WZB Berlin, Germany. The conference will be organized by Francesco Capozza (WZB), Mira Fischer (WZB), and Renke Schmacker (WZB/DIW).

Im Visual Society Program, einer Kooperation des Wissenschaftszentrums Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) und der Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), entwickeln Sozialforscher*innen und Gestalter*innen gemeinsam innovative Ansätze für die visuelle Vermittlung sozialwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse. Sie verbindet das Anliegen, gesellschaftliche Strukturen sichtbar und verständlich zu machen.

Borders and Belonging: Toward a Fair Immigration Policy (Oxford University Press 2025) is a comprehensive yet compact analysis of responses by governments, communities, and people to human  migration. It is for a readership that wants to view migration issues from a combination of many different perspectives. Though working primarily with policies and trends in the United States, the book interprets them for an intended worldwide audience.

Lecture and Book Presentation by Aidan McGarry (Loughborough University London)

I explore the role of migratory imaginaries as the socio-cultural ground of the formation of migration aspirations and their implications for the various stages of the migration process.

Emotions have always been part of social discourse and have always played an important role in politics. But the tone of debates has become rougher in recent years. Social media are driving polarization and outrage, fueling heated and often irreconcilable arguments. Spaces for discourse are narrowing and fragmenting, becoming emotionally charged.

Voller Hoffnung blickt die moderne Gesellschaft auf die Versprechungen der Digitalisierung für ältere Menschen, sie ermöglicht Teilhabe und Inklusion. Gleichzeitig birgt die digitale Spaltung auch das Risiko der Exklusion älterer Menschen.

Emerging literature studying temporary and permanent migration decisions expands the existing evidence on gendered migration desires, intentions, aspirations, and plans. Yet there remains a gap in understanding gendered aspirations from the perspective of the origin countries, especially regarding how socially defined factors interact with gender to affect migration aspirations.

Wir wünschen uns warme Wohnungen im Winter und kühle im Sommer, wir verbrauchen täglich Strom und gehen kaum noch zu Fuß: Energie und die Frage von Energieversorgung beschäftigen uns jeden Tag, ob wir es merken oder nicht. Doch der ungebremste Umgang mit Ressourcen bedroht die ökologischen Grundlagen unseres Planeten. Die fortschreitende Umweltzerstörung und die potenzielle Gefahr eines Massenaussterbens von Tieren und vielleicht von uns Menschen machen ein Umdenken dringend notwendig.
